BPT 2013

2013 meeting peopleBlack Gold/The Black Body in Performance

BPT 2013 met at the University of Texas at Austin 12-14, April.  The event was co-sponsored with The Warfield Center for African and African American Studies, the Performance as Public Practice Graduate Program in the Department of Theatre and Dance, The Center for Women’s and Gender Studies, and the Lozano Long Institute for Latin American Studies. Omi Osun Joni L. Jones hosted the event, and convened with Thomas F. DeFrantz. Nicole Martin provided expert logistical arrangements.

Working in groups, the researchers explored questions of the Black body as commodity; the joy of Blackness; the enslavement of Africans and the diaspora such enslavement created; the role of Black nations in the oil industry; the relationship between Black people and labor; Black women’s bodies as sites of psychic and economic exploitation; Black participation in international war campaigns; and Blackness as improvised reality that challenges Afro-pessimism.
