In this inaugural online series, Sept 30, Oct 7 and Oct 16, 2020, Configurations in Motion: Performance Curation and Communities of Colour, 4th iteration brings together performance curators, artists, and scholars from Vancouver, BC and from various locations in the United States, to share work, develop resources, and build strategies for supporting performance in, for and by Black, Indigenous and communities of colour in Canada and the United States.
In Fall 2020, Configurations in Motion: Performance Curation and Communities of Colour, 4th iteration continues to explore topics that impact communities of colour with presentations offered by performance curators, artists, and scholars from the United States; ongoing conversation via with presentations by Vancouver, BC-based performance curators, and an online showing of works-in- process from dance artists participating in PROJECT 686km Artistic Exchange between Vancouver and Calgary. Collectively, these events aim to mobilize knowledge, foster critical dialogue, and bring heightened awareness of dance research in theory and practice with and beyond the academic setting to explore topics that impact communities of colour.
The free, online gathering in Vancouver builds on three previous iterations of Configurations in Motion: Performance Curation and Communities of Color, first convened at Duke University in 2015 and 2016, with a convening in Montréal in 2017. These events involved approximately 15-20 curators, artists, scholars, presenters, and funders each year, and resulted in a self-published booklet of essays. In Montreal 2017, Configurations was produced as part of a series of events focusing on critical dance studies at Concordia University, in partnership with Duke University and University of Toronto.
In Vancouver, this 2020 event, initiated by Dr. Jane Gabriels, ED, Made in BC - Dance on Tour, is produced in partnership with SLIPPAGE@Duke: PERFORMANCE | CULTURE | TECHNOLOGY, and SFU Woodward’s Cultural Programming. Curators for the presentation events include: Thomas F. DeFrantz, Professor in the Department of African and African American Studies and Professor in the Program in Dance, Duke University and Configurations producer and guiding force (Sept 30), and Rosario Ancer, Artistic Director Flamenco Rosario and the Vancouver International Flamenco Festival (Oct 7).
